"What’s Left” in conversation with Stephen Gowans
Coming From Left Field podcast published May 22, 2025
Warm Greetings All,
Our podcast features Stephen Gowans, a Canadian political analyst, author, and activist known for his anti-imperialist and socialist views on U.S. foreign policy, capitalism, and Western interventionism.
Gowans authored The Killer's Henchman: Capitalism and the Covid-19 Disaster (2022), Israel, A Beachhead in the Middle East (2019), Patriots, Traitors and Empires (2018), and Washington's Long War on Syria (2017).
His blog, “What’s Left,” critiques Western dominance, corporate media, and capitalism from an anti-imperialist and class struggle perspective.
This discussion explores U.S. foreign policy, the influence of media, and the challenges confronting the left in tackling capitalism. Gowans advocates for prioritizing Marxist-Leninist principles that emphasize working-class contributions over performative activism.

This is the third time we have hosted Stephen, and, as before, I am continually impressed by his insight and unique perspective on our political landscape, especially from the viewpoint of a Canadian neighbor.
Our discussion conveys frustration with neoliberal capitalism, media complicity, and the left’s disarray, while advocating for a revitalized working-class movement. I particularly enjoyed the exchange between Greg and Stephen, as both have a strong foundation in Marxist-Leninist theory and reject liberal reformism and celebrity-driven leftism.
I highly recommend bookmarking Stephen’s blog and his Twitter account to follow his insightful perspective on our political quagmire.
Peace,
Pat
