“The Myth of American Idealism: How US Foreign Policy Endangers the World” with Nathan Robinson
Coming From Left Field podcast published November 12, 2024
Warm Greetings All,
Noam Chomsky, the renowned linguist and intellectual, has been recovering from a stroke suffered in June 2023. Before his health setback, he co-wrote a book with Nathan J. Robinson, “The Myth of American Idealism: How U.S. Foreign Policy Endangers the World.” At 95 years old, this is likely Chomsky’s last book.
For those not familiar with Professor Chomsky’s work, which has been a major inspiration to me, this is the book to have on your nightstand. It distills Chomsky’s vision and critique of U.S. power, offering an incisive critique of the self-serving myths that dominate our foreign policy. The authors discuss Washington's role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the impact of policies on The Global South, and the potential for future conflicts with Russia and China. They argue that U.S. power poses a significant threat to global security.
Noam Chomsky is the single most cited and published living author, is the winner of numerous international awards, and has written over one hundred books. Nathan Robinson is the co-founder and editor-in-chief of Current Affairs magazine, to which I have subscribed for several years. Greg and I hosted Nathan just over a year ago when he released his book, “Responding to the Right: Brief Replies to 25 Conservative Arguments.” His articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The New Republic, among others. Robinson holds a JD from Yale Law School and a PhD in sociology and social policy from Harvard University.

Nathan was an enjoyable guest and is a smart, funny, and top-notch political scholar. At the beginning of the conversation, he remarked about his previous appearance on Coming From Left Field, “this was one of the favorite podcasts I have ever done.”
That’s cool….he is one of our favorite guests.
Peace to you all,
Pat
