Warm Greetings All,
One of the most enjoyable aspects of doing a podcast is having the opportunity to engage with experts in a given area. Not just someone with an opinion, but people who devote most of their time and attention to an academic field. This is the case with guest Andy Lee Roth, an expert on analyzing media, digital literacy, and the press. He is a sociologist and the associate director of Project Censored, a news media research network involving students and faculty from several colleges and universities across North America. For over twenty years, they have been publishing an annual book, “State of The Free Press,” which lists 25 of the most under-reported news stories.
Project Censored coined the term “news abuse” to describe how the media slants coverage to muddle genuinely newsworthy topics and give the powerful a pass. They also use the term” junk food news” to describe how we are fed a steady diet of stories that are sensationalized, trivial, and lacking in substantive content rather than providing important and valuable information.
